Van Ninh District, Khanh Hoa Province has made great effort in developing science and technologies, especially in fishery and intellectual property. The district has suggested the province would build the trademark for specialties, develop traditional craft villages, apply VietGAP and support creation and innovations.

Applying several research results

According to the leader of Van Ninh District Economics Bureau, one of the outstanding tasks of the district is to promote the application of research results in production and daily life. Since 2021, the district has coordinated with units of the Department of Science and Technology to deploy many scientific and technological results such as solar-powered drying houses for agricultural products; suitable crop diversification and restructuring; xiem coconut protection and cultivation process, Trachinotus blochii aquaculture, new models of rice, chili, and peanut varieties, attracting hundreds of farmers to participate in. The commercial farming model of Sipunculus nudus in earthen ponds in Van Ninh has been approved and listed by the province in the grassroots science and technology 2022.

The implementation of advanced techniques in aquaculture in the district has gained satisfactory achievements. Specifically, the agricultural diversification and restructuring has shifted towards intensive farming, applying advanced technologies, ensuring environmental standards in water treatment, applying semi-biofloc technology or super-intensive shrimp farming technology with high efficiency; mobilizing farmers to practice VietGAP, strengthening support and cooperation in supply and consumption of products; building safe and effective industrial farming models; particularly, using high-density polyethylene (HDPE) floating cages to replace traditional wooden ones to raise safety during storms.

Tran Quang Khanh, Chairman of Van Tho Commune Farmers’ Association said the vannamei shrimp famers collective in Van Tho with 19 families has been presented with VietGAP recognition. Its total area (10ha) has been changed from earthen ponds to tarpaulins liners with the use of biological products instead of chemicals or antibiotics to improve food safety; The average yield is 25 tons/ha/crop; some households earn even 40 tons. A good example includes a vannamei shrimp farm in Van Hung Commune in association with the Research Institute for Aquaculture III to build a disease screening model, applying water treatment technology and new techniques of intensive farming, achieving productivity and a revenue of VND18-20 billion/year.

Many suggestions

According to Pham Ngoc Luyen, Deputy Chief of Van Ninh Economics Bureau, there are some challenges in the implementation of scientific and technological tasks. Some residents are still reluctant to apply advanced technological models. Other problems are due to limited funding from budgets; lack of close coordination in implementing provincial-level projects with localities; slow transfer of science and technology and lack of proposals in developing science and technology projects in localities.

Van Ninh is proposing many related contents such as building collective trademarks for Tuan Le coconut (Van Tho Commune), se garlic, Van Ninh fish cakes, Van Thang agarwood and other specialties; supporting, building and expanding VietGAP model for agricultural and aquatic products and supporting the application of provincial-level research results. The district has also proposed tasks to develop tourism, traditional craft villages, and local specialties; support localities to solve difficulties in agricultural output from research results, apply science and technology, develop solutions to meet traceability and quality standards; create favorable conditions for cooperatives to participate in e-trading floors; provide professional guidance and support for the district to organize youth creative idea contests, etc.

Moreover, the district has also requested schools and institutes located in the province to support developing series of products from seed production to product consumption, marine aquaculture restructuring, building products meeting VietGAP, OCOP standards, applying advanced technologies in production and management.
