STEAM Education is similar to extracurricular activities as it breaks out of textbooks and classes into real life.
According to Pham Vu Thanh An, a teacher of chemistry at Vo Van Ky Junior High School, Nha Trang City, is the first to apply the learning approach at his school. Many STEAM programs of geography, chemistry, biology and history have been implemented in Da Lat, Phan Rang and in Khanh Hoa Province. Before every STEAM tour, the teacher makes detailed plans to make sure safety and efficiency. Therefore, all the study tours are successful, bringing unforgettable experience to learners.
Teacher Thanh An founded the group "Nha Trang Scientific STEAM". The group has received support from benefactors, students and their parents. He organized the first scientific summer camp in Nha Trang in 2020, taking learners to Hon Chong National Observatory; participating in activities “Following Scientist A.Yersin”; having experience as a naval soldier on visit to the sailing ship Le Quy Don. During Covid-19 crisis, he gave instructions to students in Nha Trang City, Dien Khanh District and Cam Lam District to make hand sanitizer of WHO recommended formulation; and make and donate facial shields to frontline forces; together with many charity programs to give food to the poor and celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival for kids in coronavirus epicenters.
Nha Trang STEAM Science group has also organized many other meaningful activities such as Astronomy and Book Festival in Dak Nong; book exchange and gift giving on Van Thanh Island; environmental science propaganda on Binh Ba Island; Spring Festival, flying kites, reading books, playing water rockets and giving gifts to poor students in Khanh Vinh, Khanh Son and Cam Lam Districts; Fun Festival at SOS Children's Village and so on. Besides, the group has provided kids with skill training such as identifying Rip currents for drowning prevention, preserving coastal marine environment at the Institute of Oceanography; doing physical activity and exercise; and saving forests by planting trees on Co Tien Mount.
Teaching for nearly 20 years, Teacher Thanh An loves and understands kids’ needs and interests so deeply. Besides reading books, kids need to widen their knowledge via extracurricular activities to reach their full potentials. That is the goal of modern education, according to Teacher Thanh An.
