Since May 2022, Van Gia Town Women’s Union, Van Ninh District has launched a free porridge model for the poor, serving free meals on the 1st and 15th day every lunar month. Thanks to the support and effort of the Union members and cadres, thousands of portions of porridge have been given to the needy in the locality.

Early on the morning of the 15th day of the 11th lunar month, at Pham Nguyen Thi Hong Van’s house on Nguyen Thien Thuat Street, Chairperson of Van Gia Town Women’s Union, members of the charity porridge model were busy cooking and preparing boxes to put the food in. At 6, over 250 portions of porridge were ready to be served. More and more people, mostly the disabled and lottery ticket sellers came to get the food.

84-year-old Hai Tung said, “Every month, I come here to get the food. The rice here is delicious.” Tran Sang, a member of the Association for the Blind said, “I get 20 portions from the chary porridge model for those learning and working at the Association for the Blind. The charity service which runs twice a month is really very meaningful.”

Hundreds of portions are delivered out within 30 minutes. Members also bring the food to the doors of the disabled who are not able to access the service. Huynh Thi Thanh Huong, the Quarter 4 Women’s Union Branch said the local Women’s Union Branch gets 20 portions of porridge each time to deliver to poor patients and lonely vulnerable older people. Her family also donates to the charity work to reach out to someone who’s struggling.

Before the 1st and 15th day every lunar month, members start to preliminarily process raw materials. The cooking begins at 3am and the food is kept hot until the last portion is handed out every day.

For over 7 months since its operation, the model serves approximately 500 portions of porridge, nearly 1,000 portions sometimes and delivers rice and instant noodles to those in need. Realizing the meaningful work, many officials, members, and sponsors have joined hands to support the charity model. More than 4,000 portions of porridge and loaves of vegetarian bread have been delivered so far. Reportedly, there will be a so-called charity bread model to support more people in need.

The charity porridge model developed by Van Gia Town Women’s Association is where kind hearts meet, share and open to the disadvantaged in Van Gia Town and neighboring communes, according to Nguyen Hong Khanh Quynh, Chairperson of the District Women’s Union.
