In the recent junior high school education universalization trip to Bich Dam Island (Vinh Nguyen Ward, Nha Trang City), teachers of Vo Van Ky Junior High School, Nha Trang City not only taught knowledge from textbooks but also provided students with great experience through making corals from solid waste.

After school hours, students on the mainland benefit from a variety of extracurricular activities while those on the island still face many difficulties due to the lack of facilities. Therefore, in order to make extracurricular activities more interesting, Vo Van Ky Junior High School has organized a scientific experience program "Making coral models from solid waste" to help students understand more about coral habitats and thus have solutions to protect coral biodiversity as well as marine environment.

Vo Thi Thu Thuy, a teacher of geography, taught them about coral reefs and how to protect the ocean and coral reefs by ban on destructive fishing, littering and overexploitation in marine reserves. A student named Dang Ngoc Thuyet said, “Now I know consequences of coral reef destruction. I will tell my parents about the benefits of the coral reefs and ask them to join effort to protect coral reefs to preserve our ocean environment.”

The program was followed by experiencing the use of solid waste to create models of corals, shaping, coloring, etc. Under the instructions of teachers, kids got more knowledge about the reason why dead coral reefs are bleached without being disposed in water, how valuable red corals are and what we should do to help them survive in the ocean.

Le Thi Trang, Principal of Vo Van Ky Junior High School presented awards to students with the best models of coral reefs and gave gifts to students of compulsory education classes.  “I hope kids here are obedient and try to overcome difficulties to attend class regularly to pursue learning. From the mainland, teachers always have compassionate love for students on the island still lacking in facilities. Teachers will organize experience activities to help students to explore what they have learned applies to real world situations,” she confirmed.

“The city has met the standard for junior high school education universalization level 3. The Junior high school education universalization class on Bich Dam Island still have many difficulties and kids here have not had access to English language learning and extracurricular activities. Therefore, more suport is needed from local authorities to help raise the quality of education universalization and life skill teaching on the island,” said Tran Nguyen Lap, Chief of Nha Trang City Division of Education & Training.
