A group of 5 students at Au Co Junior High School, Nha Trang City has designed a comic series conveying messages on environmental issues in English and Vietnamese.
From shorts stories
Once upon a time, in a garbage kingdom facing increasing amounts of waste, a small bag of garbage decided to ask the village elder for advice. The old man said that the only way was to rescue the Revolution God on the mountain. The small bag immediately set off and on the way he met plastic bottles, paper boxes, etc. who wished to join him. After the successful rescue, the God used his magic to conduct the revolution on plastic waste reduction, reuse and recycling. Plastic bottles were replaced by personal water containers, plastic bags by shopping baskets; plastic straws, spoons and food boxes by bamboo straws and foam boxes and so on.
This is one of short stories in the comic series by 5 students at Au Co Junior High School. The series includes The Story about Garbage and Water; When the environment speaks; Green Planet; Save Forests! and The curse of the river. Many interesting stories about the environment are told through vivid drawings and witty dialogues. Stories about deforestation, river pollution, littering on the beach, etc., vividly featuring the issues of forest protection, water protection, garbage classification and recycling.
Tran Nguyen Thuy Anh, Class 9/1 (Head of the group) said the group had conducted a survey and found that most of their friends had accessed environmental propaganda via mass media, posters, leaflets and school activities. Therefore, the comics is a new way to access the environmental issue. After coming up with an idea, each member took specific tasks, writing scripts, sketching out the frames. designing layouts, drawing, etc. Once the inking was done, the comic was scanned and then uploaded onto a computer to add English version. When finishing the translation, they asked English language teachers to help them make any corrections.
Towards good habits
The comics has been completed, introduced at the school flag meeting and in class and displayed at the school library and class reading corners. Tran Nguyen An Hoa, Class 7/1 said, “We hope to create more comics and translate it into more languages. The group has also suggested the school's Board of Directors to establish a club to keep the environment clean and beautiful; organize drawing and recycling contests to raise awareness of environmental protection; ask their friends to protect the environment by putting waste in the right place, classifying garbage, keeping good hygiene, getting engaged in planting and caring for trees, raising ornamental fish, decorating classrooms and so on.
Le Quang Dung, a history teacher, a comic content writer said: "The students are very enthusiastic spending a lot of time on the comic book, but it still needs improving. In particular, the students know how to turn ideas in stories into daily life. The small acts contribute to raising awareness and developing good habits. Small things can make a big difference for the environmental sake."
The comics series is practical and effective in raising awareness of environmental preservation, especially among students, in conformity with the Law on Environmental Protection, according to the evaluation document sent to by Au Co Junior High School by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment on February 9.
