The government’s effort aims to raise public awareness of the intangible cultural heritage and encourage local communities to protect it.
Xoan singing is a folk cultural product of Phu Tho Province. It is listed in the treasure of Vietnamese folk literature. It was once performed at 30 communal houses but now only 13 venues are in operation. . Xoan singing is at risk of oblivion. It is in needed of urgent protection, so that younger generations can have a chance to enjoy one of the ancestors’ most valuable spiritual properties.
By September 2010, the UNESCO Secretariat will examine the application and require any supplemental information if necessary. In October 2010, the applications sent to UNESCO will be assessed.
The intangible cultural heritage or living heritage is the mainspring of our cultural diversity and its maintenance a guarantee for continuing creativity. UNESCO established the program identifying elements for the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, to highlight elements at risk despite the efforts of the local community to preserve and protect it.
