The Khanh Hoa Provincial Chess Tournaments aim to promote chess enthusiasm, helping regain past glory.
The event is also committed to the discovery and promotion of new talents in preparation for national tournaments.
The first round of Khanh Hoa Provincial Chess Tournament was held on July 27-29 at Nha Trang Culture & Sport Center drawing 26 excellent players in Khanh Hoa Province. The best 8 finalists after 3 rounds will advance to the national tournament to be held this October.
According to Pham Phuong Dong, Chairman of Khanh Hoa Chess Association, the tournament attracted the participation of many clubs in Nha Trang, Dien Khanh, Cam Ranh, etc. Nationally recognized players joining the event included Le Thanh Cong, Nguyen Cong Thuong and Luu Minh Tiep.
Nha Trang City has the most participants with 21 players followed by Cam Ranh, Van Ninh and Dien Khanh. The event provided a chance for domestic teams to hone their skills in preparation for upcoming national team championships.
Before the 1990s, Khanh Hoa was recognized among the top chess teams at the national chess tournaments.
However, in recent years, due to some reasons, including lack of funding. Khanh Hoa has gradually lost its achievement points.
Approved by the Department of Culture, Sport & Tourism, Khanh Hoa Provincial Chess Association was founded in 2011.
With over 200 members, the association holds a chess tournament annually to create a platform for chess lovers to meet, interact and compete with one another.
The event has helped Khanh Hoa to build on past achievements and make new progress.
