More than 10 years ago, beside other martial arts, boxing was a favourite antagonistic sport of many people in Khanh Hoa. Khanh Hoa boxers were assessed to be able to compete for medals in domestic tournaments.
In 2004, Khanh Hoa boxers won 3 silver medals and 2 bronze ones in young boxing championship nationwide. This was the last achievement of Khanh Hoa boxing in domestic tournaments. After that, boxing movement was spontaneously maintained by clubs in the province. From 2008, there were no boxing competitions organized in provincial sport movements due to the low profession.
Recently, Khanh Hoa Boxing Club Championship was held by the Provincial Boxing Association associated with Khanh Hoa Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism on July 13-14. 55 male boxers and 8 female boxers from 11 clubs in the province participated in the tourney, competing in 14 weight divisions (from 42 to 64kg).
At present, boxing is exercised in some clubs in the province such as Pham Minh Sang Club, Bich Quang Club (Khanh Hoa Children’s House), Kim Giap Club (Nha Trang City); Van Duc Toan Club, Duong Tan Van Club, Thieu Quang My (Ninh Hoa Town); Cam Phuoc Tay (Cam Lam District); Minh Phi Thanh (Cam Ranh City); Nguyen Minh Nhat (Dien Khanh District).
The atmosphere in those bouts was vibrant and attractive thanks to its high antagonism. The quite good investment of the participating units was showed through the professional quality of the tourney. “The Boxing Club Championship this year showed quite strong development of boxing in the province compared to 5 years ago. This is a good chance for Khanh Hoa boxing to return,” said Pham Minh Sang, Vice Chairman of Khanh Hoa Boxing Association.
In the future, beside maintaining and organizing regular boxing club championship in the province, and setting it as an official competition in the Provincial Sports Games, Khanh Hoa Boxing Association will strive to attend the national tournaments.
