Traditional martial arts: New hope of Khanh Hoa at National Sports Festival

Gaining some good achievements in both domestic and international tournaments, the traditional martial arts is one of the hopes of Khanh Hoa's sports in the upcoming seventh National Sports Festival held in Nam Dinh Province in August, 2014.

Gaining some good achievements in both domestic and international tournaments, the traditional martial arts is one of the hopes of Khanh Hoa’s sports in the upcoming seventh National Sports Festival held in Nam Dinh Province in August, 2014.

At this year’s festival, the traditional martial arts is expected to bring at least one gold medal to Khanh Hoa’s sports delegation. This is considered as a reasonable target because about for years ago, traditional martial arts was just a movement sport which was still inexperienced in the domestic tournaments. The development and maintenance of this sport were just spontaneous. The largest playground for this sport’s lovers was just the provincial traditional martial arts tournament. Occasionally, some traditional martial arts clubs or schools were exceptionally sent to join the Central – Highlands region tournaments or national young ones.

In the end of 2010, the traditional martial arts became a sport in the provincial Sports Technique Training Center. Since then, it received a better investment and started to have a strong development in both fields of movement and high achievement. That is the necessary and sufficient conditions for Khanh Hoa’s traditional martial arts to perform well in its first time attending the National Sports Festival.

While many movement sports have now stalled because of the difficulties in the work of training, the traditional martial arts is being maintained and developed stably. Khanh Hoa Province now has 15 traditional martial arts sects and clubs with more than 1,500 followers practicing at 41 places, clubs, and dojos, among them are some outstanding ones like Minh Long, Hac Long, Phi Long Chanh, Minh Hoang Cong an, etc.

In the field of high achievement sport, since being set up as a sport in the provincial Sports Technique Training Center, traditional martial arts earned Khanh Hoa’s sports delegation many achievements at the national tournaments.

In the national traditional martial arts tournament for young people and teenagers taking place in June in Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Provincial traditional martial arts team excellently ranked fourth out of 30 with 13 medals (five gold ones, four silver ones, three bronze ones). The provincial team also gained another good result in the international traditional martial arts tournament held in the end of July in Binh Dinh Province when overcoming many strong rivals to place third with ten medals.

According to Tran Quang Thuong, director of the provincial Sports Technique Training Center, the traditional martial arts in Khanh Hoa Province is now not as strong as ones in other localities and units nationwide like Hanoi, Binh Dinh, Da Nang, etc. However, at some events, especially demonstration, Khanh Hoa’s traditional martial arts are highly  evaluated in the national tournaments.

With those achievements, the traditional martial arts is now expected to improve the position of Khanh Hoa’s ports delegation in the up coming National Sports Festival.
