Nha Trang City’s traditional cross-country tournament has proved to be a useful playground for pupils and students in the city as well as a n opportunity for the units and schools to show their efforts for sports movement.

The 2016 tournament took place at Yen Phi Park (Nha Trang) on March 6, joined by more than 300 players of all ages from 31 communes, wards and schools in the city. The players were divided into three age groups (children’s group, teenager’s group, champion’s group) and competed in male event and female event.

Reportedly, although the number of participants and units at this year’s tournament was fewer than the 2015 one (37 units with 500 players), the 2016 tournament saw a better preparation of the participating units, shown through the performances of the players.

In the children’s group, Phuoc Dong Primary School, Vinh Thanh Primary School and Phuoc Thinh Primary School were the three most outstanding units. According to Le Van Nam, coach of Phuoc Thinh Primary School’s team, the school has offered favorable conditions for the selected players to practice for the tournament, resulting in the good results of the team in the last two consecutive years. This year, Phuoc Thinh also gained smashing achievement with whole-group second prize for children’s group.

“I am very happy winning gold medal. This will be an encouragement for me to keep practicing,” said Nguyen Hao, member of Phuoc Thinh team, finishing first in the male event of children’s group.

The champion’s event opened for players of all ages. In this event, beside the players from the junior high schools, there were some players of other sports, such as Huynh Ngoc Hien (badminton player) and Do Chi Kien.

According to Nguyen Tuan Thanh, Director of Nha Trang City Center of Culture and Sports, among the city’s movement sports, cross-country has always had strongest attraction. Especially, this year’s tournament received support from Coca-Cola Beverages Vietnam Ltd., which was considered as a driving force to keep promoting this sport.
