Reportedly, the 23rd international open tournament of Ho Chi Minh City will receive the participation of more than 400 athletes of over 30 teams from the provinces, cities, departments of Vietnam and other countries. According to the professionals, this is a high quality tournament which is joined by many most outstanding track and field athletes in the country, such as Le Thi Mong Tuyen (Ho Chi Minh City) , Nguyen Thi Huyen (Nam Dinh), Nguyen Trong Hinh (Thanh Hoa), Nguyen Van Lai (Army), Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc (Da Nang), etc.

Khanh Hoa’s athletics team join this tournament with 17 male and female athletes, competing in 14 events: 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, 4x200m, 4x400m, long jump, triple jump, 5,000m, 10,000m, race walking, etc. Some young athletes who are expected to earn good achievements for Khanh Hoa’s athletics team include Tran Anh Cuong (won silver at junior tournament, bronze at national championships 2015), Phan Van Thanh (got bronze at national junior tournament 2015), Nguyen Thi Khanh Quyen (secured bronze at national junior tournament).

Besides, at a national athletics championship held in Ho Chi Minh City last March, young male athletes of Khanh Hoa (Tran Anh Cuong, Phan Van Thanh, Pham Trung, Pham Duong Minh) gained bronze medal in 4x200m relay. This will be a driving force for the athletes of Khanh Hoa to strive for a good achievement at Ho Chi Minh City international athletics open tournament 2016.

According to Huynh Thi Cuc, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Sports Technique Training Center, Head of Khanh Hoa’s athletics delegation, it is difficult for Khanh Hoa’s athletics team to gain high achievements when competing with strong teams of Vietnam and other countries. However, the tournament will help to check and evaluate the quality of the athletes, especially young ones to prepare for the tournaments in the future. Cuc also reported that Khanh Hoa’s athletics has been facing the lack of funds and athletes of the next generation.

Although the province’s athletics in general and cross-country in particular have got good results at some national tournament, it has still been below the average level of the whole country. “Therefore, under the current difficult circumstance, joining a large scale playground like the international open tournament will be a precious opportunity for Khanh Hoa’s athletics players to exchange and learn experience,” said Cuc.
