The pupils in the communes, wards and swimming clubs in Nha Trang City had opportunity to display their swimming skills at the city’s summer swimming tournament for teenagers and children kicked off on August 14.

The tournament drew the attendance of 110 players aged from 9 to 15 years old from 13 communes, wards and swimming clubs. The players competed in age groups in fifteen events, such as men’s and women’s freestyle (children), men’s and women’s 100m (teenager), men’s and women’s 50m breaststroke (teenager, children), 4x100m relay (teenager, children), etc.

At the tournament, the contestants performed the swimming skills learned in the swimming classes opening in early summer. This year’s tournament was more attractive and competitive compared to the previous ones thanks to the team event, 4x100m relay, firstly incorporated into the tournament. The players of Ngoc Hiep Ward showed that they were superior to the ones of other units when they achieved gold medal in female children’s 50m breaststroke and gold medals in teenager and children’s 4x100m relay. The players of Phuoc Long Ward were also the outstanding ones among other players. They won silver medal in children’s 4x100m relay and bronze medal in female children’s 50m breaststroke.

Firstly organized in 2013, the annually summer swimming tournament for teenagers and children of Nha Trang City has been evaluated as a useful as practical playground for the pupils. According to Tran Tung Han, Deputy Director of Nha Trang City Center of Culture and Sports, beside aiming to assess the quality of swimming teaching and practicing in the city, the tournament also aims to create a playground for the teenagers and children to express themselves and overcome the spiritual and physical limits.

“Apart from helping the teenagers and children to exchange and make friends with each other, the swimming tournament has also helped them to improve the swimming skills to prevent drowning. The parents also feel more secure when the children join extracurricular activities,” said a contestant’s parent.
