The Nha Trang City karate open tournament for age groups has helped the young martial art practicers to improve their martial art skills as well as promote the karate movement in Khanh Hoa Province.

Last week, the 2016 Nha Trang City karate open tournament for age groups took place at Nha Trang Center of Culture and Sports. Joining the tournament were 200 martial art practicers of seven units, schools and clubs in Nha Trang City and five invited units (Dien Khanh Town, karate club of Suoi Dau Police, Ninh Hoa Cultural and Sports Center, Dien Khanh District Children’s House, Khanh Hoa Provincial Children’s House).

Reportedly, the tournament, having been organized for ten years, not only aims to check and evaluate the activities of the karate clubs and dojos in the city but also to create a connection for the karate movement in the whole province. There were 50 more athletes taking part in the 2016 tournament than the last year’s one. The contestants competed in two events: kata and kumite.

According to Nguyen Phuc Vinh, Vice-Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial Karate Association, the participating units of the 2016 tournament had a better investment and preparation for the competition compared to the previous years. For example, the quality gap between the athletes of Nha Trang’s teams and other localities’ teams was significantly narrower. In this year’s tournament, Dien Khanh’s team was superior to other teams. They won 13 medals and achieved the first place. Vinh Nguyen Club (Nha Trang) came second with 11 medals. The achievement of the karate team of Dien Khanh showed the recent strong development of karate movement in this district as well as the narrowed gap among the karate clubs in Khanh Hoa Province.

According to the statistics, Khanh Hoa Province now has around 25 karate clubs and dojos with about 800 regular practicers.  “Through the karate movement tournament held in the localities like Nha Trang City open tournament for age groups, we can select outstanding athletes for the provincial karate team,” said Vinh.
