The tournament was considered as a training tournament where the strong male volleyball teams over the country prepare for the first round of the national volleyball championship. Despite that though, Hoa Lu Cup, since the first organization in 2004 until now, has always been highly evaluated for its professional quality. The tournament often attracts the attendance of many strong teams like Trang An Ninh Binh, the Border, The Cong, Phu Tho Police, the Fourth Corps, etc.
In the 2016 tournament, beside regular teams, Hoa Lu Cup was joined by an invited team from Thailand, Royal Thai Air Force. This year, the tournament saw the competitions of six teams which were split into two groups. Sanest Khanh Hoa played with The Cong, the Border in Group A; Group B included Trang An Ninh Binh, Xo so kien thiet Vinh Long, the Fourth Corps.
Coach Trieu Tu Thien and the players of Sanest Khanh Hoa went to the North right at the beginning of the year to participate in small-scaled tournaments. Thanks to the preparations, Sanest Khanh Hoa performed quite well and passed the group stage and semi-finals of Hoa Lu Cup. In the final match, Sanest Khanh Hoa faced the host Trang An Ninh Binh, which had won Hoa Lu Cup four times out of nine times joining the tournament. Trang An Ninh Binh also had some outstanding athletes such as setter Giang Van Duc, libero Xuan Thanh, outside hitter Vu Quang Khoi and Vietnamese naturalized athlete, Nguyen Van Da (Thai-Vietnamese athlete).
The two teams showed high determination in the final and brought the spectators an interesting game. With a psychological advantage over the host, Sanest Khanh Hoa overcame the opponent and became the new holder of Hoa Lu Cup.
With the championship at the 11th Hoa Lu Cup, Sanest Khanh Hoa has been the only team until now securing all the national titles in men’s indoor volleyball.
