The competitors’ quality at the taekwondo tournament within the 8th Sports and Physical Exercise Festival of Khanh Hoa Province were highly evaluated by the professionals. This is a positive sign for the taekwondo movement and provincial taekwondo team of Khanh Hoa.

Taking place from May 19 to 21, the taekwondo contest was joined by 126 male and female athletes of seven units: Nha Trang, Cam Ranh, Ninh Hoa, Dien Khanh, Khanh Vinh, Van Ninh, and taekwondo club of Khanh Hoa Provincial Youth Union. The athletes were divided based on weight and age and competed in two events: demonstration and combat.

Taekwondo is among 12 events of Khanh Hoa’s 8th Sports and Physical Exercise. According to the organization committee, the performances of the competitors this year indicated that the taekwondo movement over the province has developed quite equally.  In the previous years, in most of the provincial level tournaments, Nha Trang, Ninh Hoa, Cam Ranh and Dien Khanh were always the outstanding units in the terms of quality and number of athletes. This year, the competitors of Khanh Vinh and taekwondo club of Khanh Hoa Provincial Youth Union showed their improvement. Khanh Vinh was the unit having most number of participants who took part in all categories. Khanh Vinh finally placed sixth with one gold medal, one silver and five bronzes. This was an encouraging result for a mountainous district where the locals are mostly ethnic minority people and have not had many opportunities to join sports activities.

The good preparation was also another highlight of the 2017 tournament. Prior to the tournament, the province’s taekwondo referees attended some training courses on competition rule changes in order to ensure the safety, fairness and exact judgments. At present, Khanh Hoa’s taekwondo has five quality referees and four referees of national level, which has been considered as appositive sign for taekwondo in Khanh Hoa.

“There was not a big gap in quality of the participants at the province’s 2017 taekwondo tournament. All of participating teams gained gold medal. We will select excellent athletes in this tournament for the provincial taekwondo team to prepare for the National Sports and Physical Exercise Festival 2018,” said Nguyen Van Danh, Chairman of Khanh Hoa Taekwondo Association and Head Coach of provincial taekwondo team.

Reportedly, the taekwondo team of Khanh Hoa with 14 athletes has been focusing on practicing for the 8th National Sports and Physical Exercise Festival in 2018. At the 7th festival, Khanh Hoa’s taekwondo team set target of two gold medals; however, they only got one silver and two bronzes. Hopefully, with the good performances showed at the taekwondo tournament of the provincial Sports and Physical Exercise Festival this year, the young athletes of Khanh Hoa will compete well at the 2018 national festival.
