The impressive performances of the new players at the 2017 badminton team tournament of Nha Trang City – 999 Tien Loi Cup, held in July 12-14, surprised the professionals and spectators.

The tournament was joined by more than 130 players from 21 communes and wards in the city. This was just a movement playground; therefore, there were not many expectations on the professional quality of the competitors. Through the tournament, the organizers hoped to create an opportunity for the new or young players to exchange experience, which would partly help to promote the badminton movement in Nha Trang. Nevertheless, many of new competitors showed quite high level of competence, which astonished the organization committee.

Some most noticeable players at the 2017 tournament were Kieu Tung Hoan and Mai Tung Linh of Vinh Hiep Ward. This was the first time Hoan and Linh having participated in the tournament. Reportedly, these two players used to play at the professional tournaments in Hanoi. Tran Danh Tuyen and Do Minh Tri were the outstanding players of Vinh Luong Ward. Tuyen left Son La Province and came to live in Nha Trang one year ago and is now a national badminton referee. Meanwhile, his partner Minh Tri (18 years old) has played badminton for over ten years. Minh Tri got a bronze medal at a badminton tournament for age groups of Nha Trang City. The competitors gave the spectators many exciting and competitive clashes.

Huynh Ngoc Hien (aged 23, Phuoc Long Ward) was a familiar participant at the tournament. Although Hien won many medals at the provincial level and regional level tournaments, he has always taken part in this city-level tournament because the tournament has still maintained its own attractiveness thanks to new participants. This year’s tournament had only two medal sets (male team and female team) for six most excellent teams out of 21 ones. This might be one of the reasons increasing the competitiveness of the tournament.

“In recent years, the badminton movement of Nha Trang City has been maintained well. The city has also been the locality in Khanh Hoa which has had strong badminton movement. Each year, there are about two or three tournaments being organized in order to promote the movement in all localities in Nha Trang. The year-by-year increase in number of participants and in quality of players has been a driving force for us to maintain the city-level badminton team tournament,” said Bao Tho, Director of Nha Trang City Center of Culture and Sports.
