Basketball has recently become an interesting and attractive sport to many young people, teenagers and children in Nha Trang City. The basketball tournament for age group has been one of the useful playgrounds for basketball lovers in the city, which has helped Nha Trang to be the pioneer of the basketball movement in Khanh Hoa. The quality of the tournament has increasingly improved and the number of participants has also increased year by year.
Twenty years ago, Nha Trang had only one basketball tournament which was just held every two or three years. At that time, the whole city only had four teams whose members were mostly war veterans. In 2009, the city Center of Culture and Sports held the basketball tournament for age group for the first time with the aim to create a useful sport playground for the teenagers, pupils and children in summer. Since then, the tournament has become an interesting place for many basketball lovers in the city as well as over the province.
The tournament has been organized nine times now. The 2017 tournament had the largest number of participants with more than 400 players of 42 male and female teams from 27 communes, wards and schools in Nha Trang and three invited units, Ninh Hoa, Dien Khanh and Cam Ranh. The tournament saw many exciting competitions and enthusiastic cheer from the spectators.

According to Dinh Khai, player of Thi Sach Club, this year’s tournament was more attractive than the previous years partly thanks to the attendance of the three invited units and the good preparation of the teams.
In women’s event, Phan Boi Chau - Cam Ranh Club becomes the champion before the tournament ends (August 17) thanks to their excellent performances. They won all games over Ngo Gia Tu - Cam Ranh Club (35-14), Nha Trang (24-21) and Ninh Hoa (24-20). “Since 2012, Cam Ranh’s female teams have always participated in this tournament. This is a useful summer playground; therefore, I hope that the organization board will keep organizing it and expand the scale to make the tournament’s quality better and better,” said Pham Thi Kim Tram, member of Phan Boi Chau - Cam Ranh Club.
Reportedly, half the members of Phan Boi Chau - Cam Ranh Club are studying or working in Ho Chi Minh City. They often return home in August to visit their family and take part in the basketball tournament for age groups of Nha Trang City. This also shows the attractiveness of the tournament to young people not only in Nha Trang but also in other localities.
