Success of traditional martial art competition within Khanh Hoa's Physical Training and Sports Festival

The martial arts competition within the framework of Khanh Hoa's Eighth Physical Training and Sports Festival included four events: taekwondo, karate, vovinam and traditional martial art.

The martial arts competition within the framework of Khanh Hoa’s Eighth Physical Training and Sports Festival included four events: taekwondo, karate, vovinam and traditional martial art. Among these events, the traditional martial art competition, taking place in August 18-20, seemed to be the most successful one with the most number of participants whose quality were also highly appreciated.

Nha Trang team was superior to other teams in both number and quality of players. 23 players of Nha Trang team were selected from hundreds of practitioners who have been practicing at the traditional martial art training places, clubs and dojos in the city. Many players of Nha Trang have high degree of competence in both combat and demonstration events thanks to being directly trained by the head coaches of Khanh Hoa Provincial traditional martial art teams (Ly Hoang Phong, Nguyen Truong Son, etc.). This has also been an advantage of Nha Trang players at the competitions.

The provincial Police team (20 players) and provincial Youth Union team (15 players) were other strong units at this traditional martial art competition. While combat is the strong point of provincial Police team, demonstration is the competence of the provincial Youth Union. These two units have always ranked in top three at the tournaments of Khanh Hoa.

Vo Thi Hong Van, player of Nha Trang, won a gold medal at this competition. This was the first time Van has taken part in an event of the provincial Physical Training and Sports Festival. She also expressed her determine to join the provincial traditional martial team.

At the end of the competition, 34 medal sets were given to the outstanding players. Also on this occasion, Vietnam Traditional Martial Art Federation offered 13 Grand Master titles to 11 late traditional martial art instructors and two martial art instructors of Khanh Hoa Provincial Traditional Martial Art Association to acknowledge their contributions to the traditional martial art movement in Khanh Hoa in particular and Vietnam in general.

Phan Van Quang, Deputy Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial Traditional Martial Association, highly appreciated the strong development of traditional martial art movement in Khanh Hoa in recent years. Reportedly, the whole province now has 15 sects with more than 2,000 regular practitioners practicing at 41 dojos and clubs. In 2017, the traditional martial art team of Khanh Hoa gained many high achievements at two national level tournaments. Specifically, the team finished fifth at the National Championships in Binh Dinh in last July with 13 medals; placed third with five golds, three silvers and six bronzes at the National Traditional Martial Art Championships held in Nghe An in August 8-15.

Hundreds of spectators who ecstatically cheered from the stands also contributed to the success of the martial arts competition of Khanh Hoa’s Eighth Physical Training and Sports Festival. As reported by Nguyen Minh Dat, Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Sports Service Center, this competition saw the most number of spectators among the martial art competitions of the 2017 festival. This partly reflected the attractiveness and development of traditional martial art in Khanh Hoa.
