The chess matches with human chess pieces played by Chinese chess players of the central and highland regions was one of the interesting activities of the 2019 Sea Festival of Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa.
In over ten years, the human chess competition held by Khanh Hoa Provincial Center of Culture and Cinema has become a unique cultural and sports activity of Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa, serving the locals and tourists on the occasions of Lunar New Year and other festivals. Within the framework of the 2019 Sea Festival, the human chess competition took place at the beach park opposite Tue Tinh Street (Nha Trang) from May 9 to 11.
As said by Van Dinh An, Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Center of Culture and Cinema, one new feature of this Sea Festival human chess competition was the participation of many good chess players of the central and highland region besides the ones of Khanh Hoa. The chess matches become more exciting thanks to the sound of traditional music instruments and performances of traditional martial arts performed by the human chess pieces.
Prior to the final competitions played during the Sea Festival, 30 chess players from the provinces of Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, and Khanh Hoa, etc. took part in the preliminary round to decide the four most excellent players. Luu Minh Hiep and Le Huu Phuoc of Khanh Hoa, Vo Van Dung of Binh Dinh and Trinh Minh Khanh of Phu Yen were the winners after the preliminary.
Luu Minh Hiep is a good Chinese chess player of Khanh Hoa who often participates in the human chess competitions. In the recent competitions, Hiep won one championship and one second prize. Young player Le Huu Phuoc is also an outstanding chess player of Khanh Hoa who was highly appreciated by Dr Tran Cam Long, an excellent chess player. Phuoc with his smart and creative moves won against Luu Minh Hiep in the final to claim the championship at the 2019 Lunar New Year competition. Additionally, at a recent exchange with chess players from Binh Duong Province, Le Huu Phuoc was one of the few players draw against master Lai Ly Huynh who achieved many championships and titles at the domestic and international competitions.
The other two semi-finalists, Vo Van Dung from Binh Dinh and Trinh Minh Khanh from Phu Yen are also famous in the Chinese chess playgrounds of Vietnam. Trinh Minh Khanh won eight championships of Phu Yen’s Chinese chess competitions from 1993 to 2015 and twelve first prizes at Tuy Hoa City’s competitions. Vo Van Dung claimed the titles at Binh Dinh provincial sports festivals in 2015 and 2017; secured bronze medal at the 2018 national Chinese chess tournament for young players.
The final match of the 2019 Sea Festival human chess tournament was the competition between Le Huu Phuoc of Khanh Hoa and Vo Van Dung of Binh Dinh. Finally, Le Huu Phuoc defeated Vo Van Dung to win the tournament’s title.
It can be said that the human chess competition with exciting matches between players and performances of traditional martial art movements partly added an interesting feature to the Nha Trang-Khanh Hoa Sea Festival 2019.
