Many basketball fans in Nha Trang enjoyed the excitement of the competitions of the first edition of the national U23 3x3 basketball tournament taking place recently in Nha Trang.

The basketball movement in Vietnam has seen some progress and a rise in popularity around the country, according to Le Hoang Anh, permanent deputy chairman of and general secretary of Vietnam Basketball Federation. Many basketball clubs have tried to improve their quality and promote their clubs’ activities. More and more basketball tournaments have been organized over the country. As a consequence of these changes, the national basketball teams have improved their results at some recent international tournaments, for example FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2019 in China, U20 Friendly Tournament in Cambodia, and ASEAN School Games in Indonesia, etc.

Vietnam has organized nineteen 3x3 basketball tournaments joined by more than 500 players. This partly reflected a quite good development of 3x3 basketball in Vietnam. After the 2019 national U23 3x3 basketball tournament, Vietnam will hold other 3x3 basketball tournaments for young players from under 14 to under 23 and the national championship with the intention of popularizing this sport and preparing for the national team at the future international competitions.

Although Khanh Hoa’s basketball has still been taking the first steps in building a movement, the province has been chosen as the venue for the national 5x5 basketball tournaments for many times. And this time, basketball fans in Nha Trang could enjoy an interesting experience of watching the first ever 3x3 basketball tournament at national level.

The first edition was joined by eight male and five female teams from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Soc Trang Province, Can Tho City, Quang Ninh Province, and so on. Each team played with three players on the court and one substitute. 28 matches were played in two days of the tournament. Finally, the female players of Ho Chi Minh City won 13-10 against Can Tho players after ten minutes in the final, claiming the victory in women’s event. U23 Soc Trang defeated the team of the Air Force – Air Defense in men’s final.

Khanh Hoa had one team taking part in this year’s U23 3x3 basketball tournament. Although the host team failed to progress from the group stage, their presence at this national-level playground could be regarded as an encouraging result for the efforts of the province’s 3x3 basketball in recent years.

Apart from the main tournament, the players competed in another contest, throwing from behind the arc (6.75 meters). Finally, the first prize of men’s event came to Dinh Tien Cong of Air Force – Air Defense; Vu Thi Tu Uyen of Hanoi won women’s event.
