Referee awarded Thailand a penalty at the 27th minute, but goalkeeper Dang Van Lam saved Vietnam.
 
Bui Tien Dung scored for Vietnam at the 32nd minute with a header; however, the goal was ruled out for a debatable foul between Vietnamese fullback and Thai goalkeeper. The score remained 0-0 after the first 45 minutes.
