In the first time participating in SEA Games, 19-year-old athlete Tran Nhat Hoang of Khanh Hoa performed excellently, winning one individual gold medal and two team gold medals. The individual achievement and contribution of Nhat Hoang to the success of Vietnam’s athletics team at SEA Games 30, which ended recently in Philippines, marked the return of Khanh Hoa’s athletics in Vietnam’s sports map.
Before SEA Games 30, Khanh Hoa’s athletics had disappeared in the domestic tournaments since the SEA Games gold medals of Pham Dinh Khanh Doan in 1999 and 2001. This year, the gold medal of Tran Nhat Hoang in men’s 400m helped Vietnam to overcome strong athletes from Thailand and Philippines in this event for the first time. In addition, Tran Nhat Hoang and his teammates claimed two other gold medals in men’s 4x400m relay and mixed gender 4x400m relay.
Nhat Hoang had been suffering from a hamstring injury before joining the national athletics team to prepare for SEA Games 30. Consequently, the coaches only expected that Hoang could perform at his best as much as possible to fulfill the target at this edition of SEA Games. Hoang’s individual gold and his contribution to the gold medals of Vietnam’s athletics team exceeded the expectation and brought honor to Khanh Hoa’s athletics.
Nhat Hoang received a warm welcome upon arrival home in Nha Trang after SEA Games 30. Reportedly, besides the rewards under the provisions of the State, Khanh Hoa’s sports section suggested other rewards to encourage Nhat Hoang for his effort and outstanding results at the SEA Games.
The achievements of Nhat Hoang at SEA Games 30 not only showed the quality and talent of this young athlete but also marked a new step of Khanh Hoa’s athletics and gave encouragement to the province’s young athletes to keep practicing hard for future achievements.
