Having an interest in bodybuilding from a young age, athlete Vu Anh Nhat Thuy Khanh Khuong, whose mother is from Khanh Hoa Province, started practice this sport and overcame many challenges to become a “gold medal hunter” in men’s bodybuilding 55 kg.
Taking inspiration from veteran bodybuilder Ly Duc
Khanh Khuong has regarded his success in bodybuilding as a result from the passion inspired by his childhood idol namely Ly Duc (a famous Vietnamese bodybuilder). Ly Duc with his muscular body impressed young boy Khanh Khuong so much that he wanted to have a body like Ly Duc.
Khanh Khuong expressed his desire to practice bodybuilding. However, his family with more than ten members was not able to support him to fulfill his passion. Khuong started saving his money to chase his dream. He often wake up at 4 or 5 am, went to the only gym in his neighborhood in Dong Nai Province to work out with primitive or handmade equipment such as weights made of cement before going to school.
While at university, Khuong persisted in chasing his dream. He finally could open his own gym in Dong Nai Province and continued to practice bodybuilding regularly. In the morning, Khuong drove from Dong Nai Province to Ho Chi Minh City to attend classes and went back to Dong Nai in the afternoon to manage his gym and practice bodybuilding.
After a long time working out, actively took part in local bodybuilding competitions and gained some achievements, Khanh Khuong was called up for the national bodybuilding team in 2005. That has been the happiest time in his life. He not only could meet his childhood idol Ly Duc but also became Duc’s teammate in the national team.
Becoming “gold medal hunter”
Khanh Khuong entered his 40, the age at which athletes often pass their peak. However, he has still been highly appreciated in his forte event, men’s 55 kg. In 2018, Khanh Khuong joined Khanh Hoa’s bodybuilding and weightlifting team. He brought two gold medals to the province, one at the national bodybuilding competition held in Nha Trang City and another at the 11th World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championships in South Korea.
Since 2005, Khanh Khuong competed for bodybuilding teams of many provinces across the country and achieved several medals at the domestic contests. As for international competitions, he secured three gold medals and one silver medal in competitions organized in Thailand (2016 and 2018), Mongolia (2017), and South Korea (2019).
At the 8th World Bodybuilding & Physique Federation Championship in Thailand, Khanh Khuong and his compatriot Pham Van Mach competed in men’s 55 kg with the bodybuilders from Thailand, South Korea, Nepal, China, India, etc. However, Pham Van Mach unexpectedly suffered an injury and could not compete. Khanh Khuong became the only representative of Vietnam in that event. He impressed the jury with his shape, muscle and performance, which earned him his first international gold medal.
As said by Khanh Khuong, he will stay with Khanh Hoa’s bodybuilding team until the end of his professional playing career. He said, “Khanh Hoa Province is the hometown of my mother and my wife. Therefore, I want to contribute to this place.”
