On the occasion of the 2020 Vietnam Sports Day (March 27, 1946 – March 27, 2020), Khanh Hoa Newspaper had an interview with Dang Quoc Van, Head of Sports Management Bureau (under Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports) about the highlights of Khanh Hoa’s sports in 2019.
- What were the achievements of Khanh Hoa’s sports in 2019?
- In recent years, the province’s sports sector has gained encouraging achievements in both movement sports and high-achievement sports. The public movement sports activities of the localities and units in the province have attracted the participation of more and more people. At present, Khanh Hoa has over 440 clubs of 26 sports. The number of people practicing sports and exercise regularly has increased year by year, constituting 35.5% of the province’s population; 36.2% of households have been sports households (up by 3-5% compared to 2016). Last year, 24 sports contests were organized at provincial level; 148 at district level; and more than 800 at commune and ward levels. There were over 800 physical teachers; 99.9-100% of students met physical standards. 80% or more of official and soldiers in armed forces played sports regularly.
In 2019, Khanh Hoa’s movement sports teams took part in 13 national contests, got two gold medals, three silvers, and four bronzes. Athlete Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan performed excellently and won a silver in weightlifting at the 2018 ASIAN Para Games (held in Indonesia). Last year also marked the first editions of basketball and swimming contests for age groups in Khanh Hoa. In the first time of organization, these two contests were joined by a lot of students from junior and high schools over the province. The success of these two contests provided a stimulus for the province’s sports sector to continue promote basketball and swimming movement in schools.
For high-achievement sports, the provincial sports teams obtained encouraging results in 2019. Khanh Hoa’s sports delegation moved up three spots compared with the previous festival to come in 22nd out of 65 provinces and cities at the 8th National Sports Festival. At this festival, Khanh Hoa’s sports showed strong development in beach volleyball, indoor volleyball, futsal, and muay Thai.
- What are the plans for the province’s sports activities amid the growing concerns about Covid-19 outbreak?
- The provincial Department of Culture and Sports proposed that the provincial People’s Committee issue documents postponing sports contests which had been scheduled to take place in February and March over the province. The province’s sports sector encourages people in the province to do exercise and play sports in order to strengthen the body's immunity and disease resistance. However, these activities have to be performed in accordance with government and medical recommendations.
The high-achievement sports teams should maintain practicing; re-arrange training and practicing plans to ensure the safety of all staffs and athletes as well as to help the teams to be ready for the tournaments in the future.
