Khanh Hoa athletes win 22 medals (eight golds, six silvers, and eight bronzes) at the 2020 Thong Nhat Speed Cup athletics tournament, a quality tournament with participation of many national athletics team members.
Thong Nhat Speed Cup athletics tournament is often jointly organized by Vietnam Athletics Federation and Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports in April. However, this year, the tournament was moved to June 10-12 due to COVID-19 pandemic. More than 600 players of 34 teams from the provinces, cities, and industries over the country and 14 units in Ho Chi Minh City took part in the 2020 tournament. The players born from 2001 to 2008 competed in young event; the professional players competed for 110 sets of medals in professional event.
Reportedly, most of the strong athletics clubs over the country fielded their excellent players to Thong Nhat Speed Cup 2020; therefore, the scale and quality of the 2020 tournament were improved quite a lot. The reason for the participation of many excellent players in this year’s tournament was that they wanted to check their form to prepare for the future professional tournaments after a long hiatus due to COVID-19. Among the outstanding players taking part in Thong Nhat Speed Cup 2020 were Vietnam’s excellent athletics athletes, namely Nguyen Thi Oanh, Le Tu Chinh, Nguyen Thi Huyen, Quach Cong Lich, Tran Dinh Son, and Trang Nhat Hoang.
Khanh Hoa sent its players to Thong Nhat Speed Cup 2020 in both young and professional events. SEA Games 30 gold winner Tran Nhat Hoang participated in professional event, men’s 400m and 4x400m relay. Some other outstanding players of Khanh Hoa at Thong Nhat Speed Cup 2020 included Trang Anh Cuong and Pham Huu Thang (men’s 100m and 200m); Nguyen Thi Thuy Van (women’s 400m, 800m, and 1,500m); Tran Nhat Hao (men’s 60m, 100m, and 200m). Finally, Khanh Hoa’s athletics delegation won 22 medals of all kinds, coming in second on the rankings behind the host Ho Chi Minh City (37 medals).
This result was a success beyond the expectation of Khanh Hoa athletics at the first quality tournament this year. Especially, Tran Nhat Hoang once again overcame senior athlete Tran Dinh Son to claim 400m gold medal in 47.21 seconds, 0.05 seconds faster than Son. In addition, Hoang and his teammates won men’s 4x400m gold medal, helping Khanh Hoa delegation to have two golds in professional event.
Reportedly, after Thong Nhat Speed Cup, Vietnamese athletics players will have another quality tournament to compete, Tien Phong Marathon National Championship which is scheduled for early July in Quang Ngai Province.
