Vietnam’s football resumed last weekend with the quarter-finals of Bamboo Airways National Cup 2020. Despite reaching the quarterfinals, the Vietnamese National Football First League (LS V.League 2) teams, Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Can Tho, were not competent enough to create miracles.
The quarterfinals of Bamboo Airways National Cup 2020 marked the resumption of Vietnam’s professional football tournaments after a hiatus of more than one month due to the recurrence of COVID-19. The quarter-final matches were competitive and attractive as expected. 22 goals were scored in four matches, an average of 5.5 goals per game. There was a big gap between V.League 1 teams and LS V.League 2 teams. Two LS V.League 2 teams, namely Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Can Tho, stopped at the quarter-finals. Therefore, the semi-final round of the 2020 tournament is still a playground of V.League 1 teams, who are Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Than Quang Ninh, and Viettel.
Than Quang Ninh and Viettel will play the first match of the semi-final round at Cam Pha Stadium at 6pm on September 16; Hanoi will play Ho Chi Minh City at 7.15pm on the same day. Both of the two semi-finals are expected to be attractive. Hanoi are the holders of the 2019 V.League 1 and National Cup. Meanwhile, Bamboo Airways National Cup 2020 and V.League 1 are the goals of both Ho Chi Minh City and Than Quang Ninh in this year’s season after AFC Cup 2020 was cancelled because of the pandemic. Viettel, with their current good form and investment, are looking forward to proving themselves at a professional playground.
The clash between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is expected to be most heavyweight clash of the tournament. This is the competition between the two current most powerful football teams in Vietnam in terms of financial resources and quality players. Reportedly, Rimario and Cong Phuong, the top strikers of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City respectively, will miss the match due to suspension after picking up red card in their previous match. Besides, Hanoi will play the semi-final without key defender Van Hau who has been suffering an injury.
The two semi-final matches are predicted to be fierce competitions, and all four teams have the same chance of advancing to the final round.
