After Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee issued a document allowing sports events to resume, Nha Trang Center of Culture, Information and Sports kicked off the city’s Football Championship 2020 on September 8. The championship, which will last until September 29, is one of the annually-held movement sports tournaments of the center and often attracts the attention and participation of several teams in the city.
Due to the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers of Nha Trang Football Championship 2020 paid a special attention on the preparation for the tournament in terms of competition schedule, number of participants, and measures to prevent and control the pandemic. There were a lot of teams signing up for the first resumed sports tournament; therefore, the organizers had to expand the number of teams. Consequently, the number of participating teams increased from 11 or 12 in the previous years to 19 this year.

The participating teams of Nha Trang Football Championship 2020 were divided into six groups to compete in a round robin format. The first and second-placed teams of each group are qualified for quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final. In the group stage, if a match ends with a draw, the final score will be decided by a penalty shootout. Many people have gone to Nha Trang Sports Training and Competition Center to see the ongoing group stage competitions, which will end on September 20. The attractiveness of this championship seems to increase when both players and spectators had to wait for sports events for a long time because of COVID-19.
Head coach Kieu Van Minh of Vinh Ngoc Commune’ team highly appreciates the organization and quality of this year’s championship and participants. This has contributed to the attractiveness and excitement of the competitions. Besides positive points, the 2020 championship also has some problems such as uneven surface of the field and inappropriate competition time during hot weather.
Reportedly, last year, Nha Trang Center of Culture, Information and Sports repaired the field surface and installed stadium lighting poles. However, due to some objective reasons, these repair and investment have not been effective, which has partially affected the performances and quality of teams and tournaments. These problems have been reported to the authorities and are expected to be solved soon.
