Khanh Hoa Province’s athletics team grabbed one gold medal and one bronze medal in the 2020 National Athletics Championship ended in Hanoi last week. This result put Khanh Hoa at the same position on the medal rankings as they were last year.
This year, due to the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic, most of the athletes of the national and local athletics teams have experienced a lot of difficulties in their practice and training. However, through the 2020 National Athletics Championship, many teams showed their good preparation and investment. Especially, the elite athletes of Vietnam’s athletics still maintained their form and performed their excellent skills at this tournament. The championship also provided a basis for the coaching board of the national athletics team to select the athletes who will represent Vietnam in the Olympic qualifiers next year.
The 2020 National Athletics Championship brought together more than 450 male and female athletes from 49 provinces, cities and industries nationwide. The participants competed in 50 events. After five days of competition, female athlete Le Tu Chinh (Ho Chi Minh City) became the most excellent athlete with five gold medals in the events of 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, 4x200m and 4x100m mixed relays. Coming after Chinh was Nguyen Thi Oanh (Bac Giang Province), who won four gold medals in the women’s events of 1,500m, 5,000m, 3,000m hurdles, and 10,000m. Finishing at 34:08.54 in women’s 10,000m, Oanh also broke the national record set in 2003 by Khanh Hoa athlete Doan Nu Truc Van (34:48.28).
This year’s National Athletics Championship also witnessed two new national records in men’s 100m of Tran Ngoc Nghia (People’s Police) at 10.40 and women’s 4x100m relay of Ho Chi Minh City team at 42.54. Nghia broke his own record of 10.47 set in 2018; Ho Chi Minh City team surpassed their own record of 44.32 set at Thong Nhat Speed Cup.
The 2020 National Athletics Championship is the most important domestic athletics tournament in this year. It also served as an opportunity for Khanh Hoa’s athletics sector to check and evaluate the quality of their athletes to prepare for the 9th National Sports Festival held in 2022. Therefore, Khanh Hoa sent their best force to the tournament. Five among 18 athletes taking part in this years’ National Athletics Championship were the province’s most outstanding ones, who have been expected to represent Khanh Hoa in the 9th National Sports Festival. The rest were the young athletes.
Tran Nhat Hoang, who won three gold medals in SEA Games 30, had been expected to earn gold medals for Khanh Hoa in this year’s National Athletics Championship. Hoang didn’t disappoint the expectation as he came first in men’s 400m at 46.91. Additionally, Hoang contributed in Khanh Hoa’s bronze medal in men’s 4x400m relay. With one gold and one bronze, Khanh Hoa’s athletics team came in 14th on the medal rankings.
The first, second, and third positions belonged to Hanoi (24 medals), Ho Chi Minh City (15 medals), and Thanh Hoa (10 medals), respectively.
