In the past three years, Khanh Hoa Province’s basketball movement developed quite strongly, which were reflected through the expanded scale of movement tournaments and the increased number of basketball clubs. Each year, the province organizes around three movement tournaments, namely the provincial basketball club championship, Nha Trang City’s 3x3 basketball tournament, and Nha Trang City’s basketball contest for age groups. In 2020, a basketball open tournament intended for the university and college students over the province was held by Nha Trang University.

About five to seven years ago, there were just over 15 basketball teams and clubs in Khanh Hoa, mainly in Nha Trang City, Ninh Hoa Town, and some military units. At present, the number of basketball teams and clubs has increased to around 30, spreading to Cam Ranh City, Dien Khanh District, high schools, colleges, and universities over the province.
Gobee VN Khanh Hoa is an outstanding basketball club among the new ones in Khanh Hoa. At the end of 2020, this team represented Khanh Hoa Province at the National Basketball Championship 2020. They had a good win against Poseidon Ninh Thuan and showed an impressive performance in the competition with a strong team from Hanoi. Gobee VN Khanh Hoa and their performances at this national championship are expected to be a base helping Khanh Hoa’s basketball to be recognized in the basketball map of Vietnam. Also in 2020, the establishment of Nha Trang Sharks NTU basketball club and their debut at the basketball championship to welcome Lunar New Year 2021 jointly organized by Nha Trang University and Nha Trang Sharks NTU could be considered as a sign of development towards professionalization of this sport in Khanh Hoa.
Reportedly, basketball appeared in Khanh Hoa a long time ago but mainly with spontaneous development. However, since 2018, the province has promoted the development of this sport through organizing and maintaining regular provincial tournaments and hosting national tournaments. The club-level contests have also contributed to the development of basketball movement in Khanh Hoa. As said by Nguyen Tuan Thanh, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports, in 2021, it is expected that about three to four big basketball tournaments will be held in Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa, such as National 3x3 Basketball Championship (scheduled for mid-March), National 5x5 Basketball Championship (scheduled for mid-June), and Vietnam Professional Basketball League (VBA).
Hosting national tournaments not only helps the local basketball fans to enjoy live competitions but also creates opportunities for the province’s movement teams to exchange and learn experience and skills from teams across the country. This will help to boost the basketball movement in Khanh Hoa.
