Khanh Hoa taekwondo team won 1 gold medal and 3 bronze medals, placing in the top 20 at the 2024 National Taekwondo Championship held in Gia Lai Province recently. This is an encouraging achievement for coach Van Thanh Danh and his team in the context of shortage of taekwondo athletes.
Athlete Vo Anh Quyen win gold medal in men’s combat 51kg |
This year's National Taekwondo Championship was jointly organized by Gia Lai Provincial Department of Culture and Sports, the Sports Authority of Vietnam and Vietnam Taekwondo Federation from October 21 to 25. The tournament gathered more than 350 athletes from 38 teams from provinces, cities and sectors across the country. The athletes, divided by weight classes, competed in the events of demonstration and combat for 31 sets of medals.
According to Van Thanh Danh, head coach of Khanh Hoa taekwondo team, the achievement of Khanh Hoa at this year’s championship was the best compared to previous years. Vo Anh Quyen of Khanh Hoa surpassed his best result in the previous years with a gold medal in men’s combat 51kg, which was Quyen’s forte. The 3 bronze medals of Khanh Hoa came from women's combat under 57kg, women's combat over 73kg and women team’s demonstration.
However, according to Van Thanh Danh’s assessment, the achievements of Khanh Hoa taekwondo team this year were somewhat thanks to luck, as the team’s lineup was relatively limited. Currently, the provincial taekwondo team only has 7-8 athletes who meet the qualifications to compete in the national championship (black belt, 17 years or older). Only 3-4 athletes among them can be competent for medals (both in combat and demonstration). Besides his own effort, the achievement of Vo Anh Quyen in this year’s championship was a result of over-20-day training in Ho Chi Minh City, the locality with many excellent taekwondo athletes of the national team. In order to prepare for the upcoming national sport festival, the coaching board of the provincial taekwondo team will propose sending athlete Vo Anh Quyen to strong centers in the country for quality training.
