VBA Star X-2025: Hanoi Buffaloes win play-off opening match

In the opening match of the playoff round of Vietnam’s professional basketball tournament, VBA Star X-2025, taking place in Hanoi on September 4, Hanoi Buffaloes claimed a dramatic 83-79 win over defending champions Saigon Heat, thereby showing that they are ready to usurp Saigon Heat’s title.

The clash between Hanoi Buffaloes and Saigon Heat in this year's VBA Star X playoffs was being considered as the de facto final of the tournament. Hanoi Buffaloes have been on a tear this season, ending the stage round with an undefeated streak of 16 matches and a first-place finish. Meanwhile, Saigon Heat is the most successful team in VBA with 5 consecutive championships. Although Saigon Heat struggled early in the season and secured the final playoff spot, they remain formidable rivals.In the opening playoff game, both Hanoi Buffaloes and Saigon Heat fielded their strongest lineups with top players namely DaQuan Bracey, Tamyrik Fields, Hassan Thomas, Davon Dillard, Tim Waale, Vo Kim Ban, and Nguyen Huynh Phu Vinh. The first three quarters were a nail-biter with attacks from both sides towards each other. The tension reached its peak late in the fourth quarter when the score was tied 77-77. However, Hanoi Buffaloes proved to be more competent team with their dynamic trio of Bracey, Tamyrik Fields and Hassan Thomas more stable performance (fewer injuries). Hanoi Buffaloes finally secured a dramatic 83-79 victory over defending champions Saigon Heat.

This marked the third win for Hanoi Buffaloes over Saigon Heat this season and gives them a crucial 1-0 lead in the race for a spot in the final against Saigon Heat. DaQuan Bracey was named Player of the Game with 30 points scored, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Hanoi Buffaloes have a rematch with Saigon Heat on the latter’s field in Ho Chi Minh City on September 7. If they win, Hanoi Buffaloes will earn a ticket to the final against the winner of the playoff match between Nha Trang Dolphins and Cantho Catfish.
