Well-known since 1930s, Institute of Oceanography in Nha Trang is not only the biggest marine specimen keeper in Vietnam but an interesting cultural historical tourist destination in Nha Trang...
Institute of Oceanography in Nha Trang is one of first scientific research institutes in Vietnam and its collection of more than 20,000 specimens and living creatures is biggest in the Southeast Asia.
Not only for scientific research, Institute of Oceanography is a tourist destination in Nha Trang. For many years, the institute has been voted as one of ten most interesting cultural historical tourist destination.
Each year, there are about 220,000 – 290,000 visitors to the institute.

Specimen of sea creatures have been collected from sea areas of Vietnam, Cambodia and neighboring countries. Some of them are in danger of extinction such as dugong.
Especially, the displayed a great skeleton of whale, 26 meters in length and 3 meters in height, which was buried in Red River Delta for 200 years.
Visitors coming here also have a chance to know about natural features of the East Sea, minerals, resources and ecological system.
Along with many other exhibitions, Institute of Oceanography of Nha Trang features Marine Resources of The Spratly and Paracel Archipelagos. Displaying historical document, images, specimens, creatures and many others found in two archipelagos of the Spratly and Paracel, the exhibition really fascinates visitors.
The exhibition is arranged according to themes. Right at the tunnel entrance is specimen of a big clam, 1 meters in length and 145 kilograms in weight, collected in Spratly waters in April 4, 1991. Next, aquariums will bring visitors to a colorful waterworld. Visitors also have a chance to see biological and geological specimens.
Moreover, the exhibition has a lot of document, newspapers, photos, maps, surveys and measurement that confirm the country’s sovereign in two archipelagos of the Spratly and Paracel.
In the time to come, the institute will open a hi-tech area taming sea creatures to serve the country’s marine economy development policy.
